Perspective was established in 2018 by peer specialist Elaine Browne. A peer specialist is a person who has personal lived experience of mental health and is qualified to support others in similar situations. Perspective is a trauma response and self compassion based practice.
Peer Support and Peer Coaching is an empowering process where a person is with a professional “who gets it”. Often times, this can be a struggle with mental health and people can feel misunderstood, ashamed and unheard.
People find authentic compassion and understanding in peer support through the mutual respect and ease of the relationship, thus lessening the stigma and inadequacy often felt by people.
Perspective has worked with:
People who are feeling hopeless
Self harm
Ongoing low mood
Anxiety and Panic
Low confidence and self esteem
Perspective works with groups and individuals. We have worked with schools, companies, mental health services and community groups.
Elaine, in her capacity as a peer specialist has spoken at numerous nation conferences on mental health and has been a guest lecturer. She continues to be a passionate advocate for the evidence based principles and practices of Peer Support.
Elaine won the 2018 Mayo’s Inspirational Woman award through the Mayo Rape Crisis Centre and was 2nd in The Red Cross Community Awards in 2019.
2020 saw the graduation of Katie Duffy, through her placement at Perspective and her studies at Dublin City University of her qualification in Peer Working.
At present, there are two peer support workers on placement at Perspective and one family peer support worker, all training at DCU.
